Gomero with fretwork from Úbeda, Spain

This is a nice piece hand crafted by one of the workshops currently active in the Spanish city of Úbeda. Various workshops in Úbeda still keep alive all the essence of Úbeda ceramics in several potteries that continue with the tradition and quality but also with the innovation that makes Úbeda ceramics an enjoyable long run history.

The peculiar name of this piece so typical form Úbeda comes from the times in which some inhabitants of La Gomera island (one of the 7 Canary Islands) came to Úbeda with some pottery pieces very similar to that one, that later become one of the icons of the local ceramics.

In this beautiful piece concurs all the artistic tradition of the area, with his vitrified green and brown colors making old style geometric forms with fretwork, incisions and filigree called “bordados” performed by hand with a small knife, and different shapes and finishing depending of the workshop.

The “gomeros” can be used not only to store fruits or vegetables, but also in house and garden decoration. Introducing a lamp or a candle within, the “gomero” will transport you to the magic Andalusian nights.
