White Fang mask with small gnomo

1 item left

We present at The Botijo some masks of the Fang culture, which are among the most elegant of African art. The tradition of these white masks has been lost over the past 90 years, but according to all scholars are masks carried by male associations of Fang clans called Ngil, who developed judicial and political functions, keeping the peace and throwing the bad witches. The Fang culture is part of the Bantu people, and developed originally within the current Ecuatorial Guinea, Cameroon and Gabon, and moved lately to Central and East Africa.
Although the structure of the mask is always the same, long white faces crowned by a haircut or identical cap, all are different, with different facial ornaments and even the mouth, always salient, can be closed or open, distinguishing because the open mouth is painted red.
